Bush Theatre
New-writing theatre in the former Shepherd’s Bush Library; world premiere venue of Kwame Kwei-Armah’s ‘Elmina’s Kitchen’ (2003) and a long line of Black British playwrights. The Bush Theatre moved into the former Shepherd’s Bush Library on Uxbridge Road in 2011, but its commitment to Black British new writing long predates that address. Among the most consequential premieres of the 2000s — Kwame Kwei-Armah’s Elmina’s Kitchen (2003), which transferred to the National Theatre and then the West End — began on the Bush’s stage.
Under artistic directors Madani Younis (2012–2018) and Lynette Linton (2019–), the venue has developed and produced work by Inua Ellams, debbie tucker green, Theresa Ikoko, Tyrell Williams, and many others — sustaining a pipeline that few other London new-writing venues have matched.
