Brixton House

A 200- and 60-seat theatre on Coldharbour Lane that opened in 2022 as the successor to Ovalhouse, with a Black-led artistic programme rooted in its Brixton home. Brixton House opened in 2022 in a purpose-built complex on Coldharbour Lane, taking on the legacy of Ovalhouse — the Kennington venue that, since the 1960s, had been one of the few London theatres consistently producing work by Black writers and companies, including the Dark and Light Theatre Company and Temba Theatre.

The new building has two auditoria (a flexible 200-seat main space and a 60-seat studio), seven rehearsal rooms with aerial-rated ceilings, and fully wheelchair-accessible technical rigs. Its programme — under the artistic directorship of Gbolahan Obisesan, succeeded by Camilla Mendoza — is explicitly anchored in Brixton’s Black, working-class and creative communities, premiering and touring work that often makes its way out to other UK and international stages.

Notable runs at the venue have included new work by Inua Ellams, Mojisola Adebayo, and a steady flow of devised theatre, hip-hop theatre and circus.
