Black Cultural Archives, Windrush Square
Britain’s national heritage centre dedicated to the histories of African and Caribbean people in Britain — opened on Windrush Square, Brixton, in 2014. Founded in 1981 by historian and educator Len Garrison and others — galvanised by the New Cross Fire and the Brixton Uprising — the BCA campaigned for over thirty years to secure a permanent home. Raleigh Hall on Windrush Square, a Grade II Georgian building, was restored and opened to the public in 2014.
The archive holds papers, photographs and oral histories spanning Roman Britain to the present, and is the principal scholarly counterpart to Britain’s mainstream museums on Black British history.
